Course Syllabus

The AP United States History course is a demanding, college level
educational experience. Students should also be aware that the course requires some personal interest in the material to achieve a 4 or a 5 on the national test. As a result, the grading is somewhat different than the usual high school experience. Tests and assessments are weighted more importantly than other classes you have experienced. Secondly, reading the text is extremely important following each class. The text does not have questions at the end of short sections, however you will be provided with a reading guide to help focus on the important points.

Another point to be observed concerning the readings is that events follow themes and patterns. A "B" or an "A" in this class, as well as a 3 or higher on the exam, require being able to see links between events, rather than events as a discrete list.

For all these reasons, it's necessary that each student take a half hour or so a day to sit back and read the assigned readings for the day. It will probably take longer at first, but once you settle into a routine it will not task as long.  Copying someone else's reading guide, or simply trying to find the answers to the reading guide prompts will therefore not work for an acceptable assessment grade.

Snow days will require work and attention, the AP test is the first Friday in May and is not rescheduled for any reason. For acceptable practice and coverage of the material we will be completing the text by May 1st.  So there will be snow day assignments that will need to be turned in by email by the end of the snow day.

The routines are as follows:
1. There will be a weekly writing assignment. The AP test includes one long response essay (LRQ's), 3 short response essays (SRQ's), and one document based question (DBQ). We will work on constructing a one paragraph response (for the SRQ's) and five paragraph essays (LRQ's and DBQ's).  In the beginning we will be working on each part of the essay, by second semester we will be working on whole essays.
2. There will be occasional quizzes. These quizzes will follow the format of the AP test, which is a short text excerpt or picture (stimulus), followed by 3 to 5  multiple choice questions  that can either be directly related to the stimulus or related to the stimulus. Finding the correct response and eliminating the wrong responses (distracters) is a skill, but obviously will require the knowledge of the student.
3. At the end of the unit there will be a multiple choice test following the AP format.  There will be at least two unit tests each quarter.
4. Reading guides will be collected for completion points.

With all the challenges mentioned here, it should be noted that if a student approaches this class with curiosity, a desire to learn about American History, and a spirit of collaboration, at least a 3 is easy.  Let's work together so that everyone gets a 5 in May!
