FRQ Workshop, 10/5/2017
Objective 1 - Begin work refining FRQ skills: Accuracy, Focus, Form.
Objective 2 - Develop 1st paragraph skills: Thesis statement focus

Instructions - Choose ONE prompt and write a complete 5 paragraph essay. Write a first paragraph for each of the other 5 essays. As you gain proficiency with this skill, the time you take to write a solid first paragraph with a clear thesis should decrease.

When you take the AP test you  will have a short period of time where you are expected to formulate your thoughts and not write the essay. Your first goal during this time is to decide on a thesis and work to deal with the issue and possible conflicts.

1.
Evaluate the different approaches taken by the various reform movements to the problems of antebellum society?  What role did the Second Great Awakening and Romanticism play in these movements?

2.
During the 1830s and 1840s, abolitionists were almost as unpopular in the North as they were in the South.  Evaluate this statement, indicating the major groups opposing the abolitionists and the reasons for their opposition.  What effect did Northern racism have on both the abolitionists and on their opponents?

3.
Even without the moral question of slavery, the economic issues between the North and the South severely strained relationships in the period  preceding the outbreak of civil war.  What were the South's specific economic grievances against the North in this period?  What measures did the South take to remedy its situation, and how successful were these measures?

4.
Identify the factors that encouraged western migration after 1820.  How did the rising importance of the West influence the social, economic, and political trends of the rest of the country in the antebellum period?

5. Analyze to what extent U.S. expansion during the period 1820 – 1860 was motivated by southern desires to spread the institution of slavery.

6.
Evaluate the movement for women's rights in the 1830s and 1840s.  What tactics and arguments were used and how successful were their efforts?

First paragraph should include:
1. Description of the issue
2. If the issue includes a conflict, a short description of the conflict
***3. A thesis statement
