1. Assigned 3/8, due 3/13 -
Step One: Choose a geographic area you are interested in and/ or know
well. The area should be no larger than a very small town or a
neighborhood that can be found in the - Spotcrime or Neighborhood Scout online resources.
Step Two: Write a two paragraph
essay based on the following prompt:
Do the crime statistics in your neighborhood match your perception of
the neighborhood? For instance, we saw Ocean City having a large number
of drug arrests. That is consistent with the expectations of people
familiar with the area. If the area you chose has a lot of burglaries,
are you surprised, or does that match what you know about the area?
From your experience, and using the resources posted on the syllabus,
do you see any solution to the problem, if there is one. For instance,
do you believe that Poverty, and
Inequality influence the crime rate? Or do you
believe that Psychological
Criminologyinfluences the crime rate in your area? Or do you
believe that the Choice Theory
affects the crime rate and that different penalties might be effective?
If the area you chose does not have much crime, explain one or two
possible reasons. Is it because of a neighborhood watch program, or
because there is a police station close by?
The objective is to begin to apply the theory that we've studeied for
the first six weeks to actual events on the ground. If any of you
become involved in law enforcement, effectively applying theory and
best practices to actual situations is essential.
