Honors US History Journal Guidelines

2015 - 2016 School Year

Mr. Marchand

Objective: To provide Seton Keough High School students with a perspective on "big" issues that link events, trends and concepts being studied.

There are three types of journals. Each type of journal must be addressed properly.

1. Documents - Documents will be posted as links in the class website. The first paragraph should describe the document, including the author and the status of the author (is the author someone who observed the events or is the author analyzing the evens later?). The second paragraph should deal with the question, including the student's response and support from the document.

2. Anaysis question - The question will ask for a link between events or series of events, or will concern the influence of people on events or series of events. The first paragraph should describe the people/ events, the second paragraph should describe and support how the people/ events are linked.

3. Event question - The question will ask for a description of two or more events, and then how the events are related. The description of the link and the support of the opinion is the bulk of the grade. The description of the events should taske up one paragraph each, and the analysis of the links should take one or two paragraphs.

Standards - Journal responses must be typed and double spaced, and should take no more than a page.

An A Journal entry will accurately describe the status of the author or the events, and will clearly answer the question. The answer will include support from the document or the events for each assertion.

A B Journal entry will accurately describe the author or events, and will fairly clearly answer the question. The answer will include support from the document for most assertions.

A C Journal entry will describe the author or events, and will fairly clearly answer the question. The answer will include support from the document for some assertions.

A D Journal entry will either accurately describe the author,  or the events, or will include some support from the document.

An F Journal entry will meet no objectives.

Journals

First Semester

1. Journal #1 Assigned 9/24, due 9/29 with Unit 1 test - Choose One of the following prompts:
                A. If you were a northern merchant, could the British have done anything that would both make you happy and make sure you were paying for the services provided by the British Government? Remember, the colonists had British troops protecting them, the British navy was protecting the goods being shipped to and from the colonies, and the British legal system would have made sure you got your money.

                 B. If you were a southern plantation owner, would you have supported independence? Would you have been concerned with the fact that you were only allowed to sell your goods to British companies? Would you have been concerned enough to support independence? And would you have felt enough allegiance to the northern colonies to support independence because of events such as Lexington and Bunker Hill?

2. Journal #2; "The Cult of True Womanhood" DBQ #1, Assigned 11/5, due 11/12

3. Assigned 12/7 due 12/11 - Choose One of the following prompts:

                   the effect of your response?

                   B. Read Frederick Douglass's account of his escape, Click HERE for the link.
Imagine
yourself as one of the following:

                              3. The governor of Maryland
What would your reaction to  the article be? How would you respond? What would be the
                  effect of your response?

                   C. Read John C. Calhoun's speech in the defense of slavery, Click HERE for the link
Imagine yourself as one of the following:
                       1. A northern senator in the same chamber as Calhoun when he delivered the speech
                       2. A senator from Missouri, which had a controversy over slavery settled by the
                         Missouri Compromise.
                       3. Frederick Douglass
What would your reaction to  the article be? How would you respond? What would be the
                  effect of your response?

4. EXAM FRQ assigned 12/9, due on exam day

5. Journal Assignment - Assigned 1/7, due 1/12

Focus on the African American leaders in the account of the meeting between the leaders, General Sherman, and Secretary Stanton. How does the account change your perception  on the life of African Americans in the South before and during the Civil War?
                 Some areas of focus:

     A. When and where did the meeting take place?
     B. What were the circumstances? For instance, had conflict been resolved?
     C. Before reading the article, what did you know about African American society in the South?
     D. Do you think the situation for African Americans in Savannah was unique, or do you think there's a possibility it was similar to other settings in which African Americans lived? If you think the situation is not unique, would you be more likely to see a similar social order in the country, in the cities, or both?
      E. One of the issues Sec. Stanton was concerned about was the situation of newly free people in the South. Do you think the social order he encountered would make him more concerned or less concerned about this issue?

Second Semester

1. Complete History Day Projects

2. FRQ - Assigned 3/21, due 4/7; Develop one point and two supporting facts that you would use if you were writing a five paragraph essay in response to each prompt.  Do not write a full essay, and do not write an introductory paragraph. Simply write one paragraph that would support a conclusion that you would make for each prompt. The paragraph should have a "thesis" statement and two supporting facts. Look at the guidelines for each prompt.

Prompt 1 - Describe the process of initiative, referendum, and recall. Explain the abuse or type of corruption each process would be designed to resolve.
Guideline: Choose one of the processes. Define the process and then describe the abuse the process is supposed to resolve. Give one example, and make sure you use vocabulary. The description and the example are your two supporting facts.

Prompt 2 - Why were women the predominant leaders in reform movements of the early 20th Century?
Guideline: This is a very open "AP type" prompt. Here you would most likelygive an example of a movement  other than suffrage, but you would link the movement with suffrage some way. You would give a specific example  (person or event) supporting your  "non-suffrage" point. The link with women's suffrage and the event or person description would be your two supporting facts.

Prompt 3 - Teddy Roosevelt supported and guided much reform legislation through Congress. These reforms were in the areas of  "trustbusting", regulation of business,  health and the environment including  foods, drugs, and conservation of natural resources,  and civil rights.  Were these reforms initiated by Roosevelt, or was he reacting to events and "staying ahead" of issues the public was making important?
Guideline: In this prompt you are asked to decide whether Roosevelt was leading by bringing important issues before Congress, or was he following by figuring out what issues people were concerned about. For this prompt pick a specific issue, such as national parks or food safety, make your point (was Roosevelt leading or following?) and then support your assertion with two events or pieces of legislation that Roosevelt supported.

Prompt 4 - Woodrow Wilson initiated many government agencies that are still there today. These agencies, such as the Federal Reserve, the income tax and various anti-trust laws, regulate the economy. On the issue of women's suffrage and integration, he was much more likely to leave the issue up to the states. Was he correct in separating these issues, or shoud he have linked all of them together?
Guideline: If you were responding to this prompt as an entire essay, there is only one thesis. The rest of your essay would be giving examples to support your assertion. You would use "positive" examples,  things Wilson did, and compare them with "negative" examples, things he did not do, or actively did that set certain reform issues back. Here, make your thesis statement and write up one example with a supporting point.

3. Assigned 4/15, due 4/20 -
Examine Wilson's 14 Points.  Wilson's three goals in proposing these "new rules" were to end colonialism, establish elected republics in Europe, Asia and Africa, and prevent another major war.  Respond to TWO of the three following prompts:

     1. Which of the points would have ended colonialism? What would replace the colonial administrations? Lastly, provide one reason Britain and France would reject these points.

     2. Which countries in Europe would establish elected governments under the 14 Points? Would these countries be old or new? If they would be new, what country would they have been part of before the war?

     3. Which of these points would prevent another war from happening? Were these points based on specific events in World War I? If so which ones?

4.
EXAM ESSAY: Choose ONE of the following prompts

Respond in a 5 paragraph essay. Three standards to follow:

      1. remember the intro is the intro and the conclusion is the conclusion.
      2. Each point should have two supports
      3. If it isn't in chronological order make it clear why not

NO bullets or charts! Essay is to be done ahead of time and turned in with exam.
