2014 - 2015 School Year

Mr. Marchand

Objective: To provide Seton Keough High School students with a perspective on "big" issues that link events, trends and concepts being studied.

There are three types of journals. Each type of journal must be addressed properly.

1. Documents - Documents will be posted as links in the class website. The first paragraph should describe the document, including the author and the status of the author (is the author someone who observed the events or is the author analyzing the evens later?). The second paragraph should deal with the question, including the student's response and support from the document.

2. Anaysis question - The question will ask for a link between events or series of events, or will concern the influence of people on events or series of events. The first paragraph should describe the people/ events, the second paragraph should describe and support how the people/ events are linked.

3. Event question - The question will ask for a description of two or more events, and then how the events are related. The description of the link and the support of the opinion is the bulk of the grade. The description of the events should taske up one paragraph each, and the analysis of the links should take one or two paragraphs.

Standards - Journal responses must be typed and double spaced, and should take no more than a page.

An A Journal entry will accurately describe the status of the author or the events, and will clearly answer the question. The answer will include support from the document or the events for each assertion.

A B Journal entry will accurately describe the author or events, and will fairly clearly answer the question. The answer will include support from the document for most assertions.

A C Journal entry will describe the author or events, and will fairly clearly answer the question. The answer will include support from the document for some assertions.

A D Journal entry will either accurately describe the author,  or the events, or will include some support from the document.

An F Journal entry will meet no objectives.

Journals

First Semester

1. Assigned 9/24, due 9/29 - Choose One of the following prompts:
                A. If you were a northern merchant, could the British have done anything that would both make you happy and make sure you were paying for the services provided by the British Government? Remember, the colonists had British troops protecting them, the British navy was protecting the goods being shipped to and from the colonies, and the British legal system would have made sure you got your money.

                 B. If you were a southern plantation owner, would you have supported independence? Would you have been concerned with the fact that you were only allowed to sell your goods to British companies? Would you have been concerned enough to support independence? And would you have felt enough allegiance to the northern colonies to support independence because of events such as Lexington and Bunker Hill?

2.
Exam Essay -

3. Assigned 1/12 due 1/16 - Read the transcript of the meeting between Gen. Sherman and Secretary Stanton and the African American leaders of Savannah Ga. Respond to the following prompt:

Your Response should be written as follows:

Paragraph 1: The time, place and people in the transcript, as well as a general description of the people. What were their occupations and how did they lead?
Paragraph 2: A general description of the topics the men discussed.
Paragraph 3: Was there anything unexpected in the transcript? If you had any prior knowledge about the social order in southern cities and towns, what was the source of that knowledge?
Paragraph 4: The clincher, how accurate were these people about the future?
