Welcome to Honors US History for the 2015 - 2016 year. This syllabus will provide two tools for students (and parents). First, it will be a daily guide to the sequence of class, readings, and assignments.  Second, at the end of the semester it will provide a guide to studying for the exam. It will be updated weekly. If the sequence doesn't look correct to you or is out of date, your browser may be loading a stored page rather than the current page. Check the date at the bottom of the page to make sure you're up to date.

First Quarter Objectives: At the end of this quarter, the students should be able to:

Chapter 1 

1. Develop a basic understanding of the development of the many Native American cultures
2. Identify common aspects of Native American cultures
3. Explain differences in Native American cultures
4. Describe the development of African cultures in reference to their influence on American History
5. Describe the development of European History in reference to their influence on American History
6. Relate the different reasons why people from Europe and possibly Africa came to North America

Chapter 2  

7. Compare and contrast the reasons for the British, the French and the Spanish to develop colonies in North America
8. Summarize Native American resistance to Spanish rule
9. Contrast English and Spanish patterns of conquest
10. Explain why a large number of British colonists moved to North America

53. Describe how industrialization and capitalism impacted the US economy
54.  Explain how improved transportation systems, new inventions and technology helped fuel the country’s economic growth
55. Summarize the reasons American settlers headed west during the mid-1800’s and map the primary trails
56. Describe the impact of westward expansion on Native Americans
57. Explain why Mexico encouraged settlement in Texas and list the consequences
58. Describe the issues that led to war with Mexico, and analyze the reasons many Americans wanted conflict to settle the issues
59. Summarize the progress of the war and explain why US forces won
60. Identify territories the US gained from Mexico
61. Explain reasons western expansion increased, related to events such as the discovery of gold in California

Chapter 10

62. Describe differences between the north and south and analyze the trends of these differences
63. Explain why the Wilmot Proviso failed and why California statehood was controversial
64. Analyze the efforts of Clay, Webster and Douglas to prevent secession throughnthe Compromise of 1850
65. Describe the provisions of the Fugitive Slave Law and explain how it increased the activity of abolitionists
66. Explain how sectional needs such as the northern railroad undermined the compromises negotiated in Congress
67. Explain the Kansas issue and how it influenced the formation of new political parties
68. Analyze the impact of the Dred Scott decision and the Lecompton constitution on the political crisis over slavery
69. Explain popular sovereignty and the public reaction to the idea compared with the Free Soil platform of Lincoln
70. Describe the election of Lincoln and the reasons for southern secession that followed
