Government/ US History:

First Semester

1.  9/5-6: Government Chart - Keep in notebook. Remember, many jurisdictions do not have local government. Baltimore City has local government but no county government.

2. 11/3:  Essay 1 - Everyone: The class engaged in some very spirited debates. Upon reflection, how important is it that there be a general acceptance by the public of any amendment? Should the government depend more on public acceptance of the amendment, or can the government rely on states writing laws and enforcing the amendments? Use your knowledge and other resources to answer this question.

Essay 2 (debators, the three chairs may choose this one): Choose one amendment WRITTEN AND/OR  DEBATED IN CLASS that has a connection with the Bill of Rights. It could be one that corrects a penalty that you feel is cruel and unusual, it could be related to due process, it could be to correct a legal or court error, or it could solve a simple injustice. Explain your answer.

Essay 3 (chairs may choose this one instead of #2): This is a two part prompt. First, was there any point in debate that you wish you could have  presented your own opinion? If so, which one and what would have been your position? The second part of the prompt concerns your use of parliamentary procedure. Do you feel "parli pro" made it easier or harder to keep the debate:
A) On topic AND B) Finding a consensus so people could narrow a topic or come to a consensus decision?

1. Examine the occupations and status (free or slave?) of the ministers, is there anything unexpected (i.e. did you expect to find free African Americans living in Georgia before the war)?
2. Read the whole transcript, but look at Third, Fourth, and Fifth closely. Considering the fact that this was January of 1865, how accurately did the ministers predict what would happen in the near and long term?
3.  Several of the questions  concern the military service. How do the ministers respond to these questions, especially on the idea of former slaves seeking vengeance?
4. In the last entry, how did the ministers feel about Gen. Sherman?
5.  How did you interpret  the way these men all look to the future? Is you general impression that they were confident? Apprehensive? Not having any idea where they were going next? Support your response in 2 sentences.
